Camping at the Fort Custer Recreation Area, Augusta, Mi.
Orignally, Fort Custer was a military facility, and many soldiers were trained here for the Army in both World War I and World War II. Currently, most of the facility is now civilian, with an industrial park, as well as the campground. However, there are a few government facilities still in the area, including a US Army Reserve post, VA Hospital, and Fort Custer National Cemetary. The area was named for none other than Gen. George Custer.
The state park is located near Augusta, Mi, about half way between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, Mi. The park is just north of I-94, so access is relatively easy. Augusta has a convenience store and gas station, but not much else. You will need to travel into either Kalamazoo or Battle Creek if you need anything major. Of the two, Battle Creek's shopping district is closer.
The park has several lakes for fishing, but there is a restriction on boating. Eagle Lake, the largest has a beach as well as an improved boat ramp. However, the entire lake is no-wake speed. The other two lakes, Whitford and Jackson Hole are non-gas motor lakes only. Unfortunately, the beach at Eagle Lake is about a mile from the campground, and is only open during daylight hours. So there is no early morning fishing possible on Eagle Lake (however, Whitford and Jackson Hole can be fished anytime. The park is also known for the fine bicycle trails, and several regional bicycling events are held here each year.
