Hartwick Pines is centrally located in Michigan's lower penninsula, just a short distance from I-75 and Grayling, Mi. It makes for a nice stop-over for those traversing north-south on I-75.

It seems as though the Michigan State Park system has been undergoing some improvements, as at least half of the campsites here are full service (electricity-water-sewer) and with concrete pads. This is a huge advantage as many campers these days have RVs that can take advantage of these improvements.

Perhaps one of the biggest customers here at Hartwick Pines are Army Guardsmen. The Michigan Army National Guard has a summer-camp location here, so many members bring their families to the campground, especially in July. For that reason, it can be challenging to obtain a campsite here during the mid-summer months.

There are a couple of small lakes on the state property, but remote to the campsite. They are fishing lakes only.

There is also an intrepretive pine forest walkway through the park.
