South Higgins Lake is one of the larger campgrounds in the Michigan State Park system with nearly 500 sites. However, not all sites are level, so on-line reservations are recommended as you can acertain whether or not the site is level from the reservation website.

South Higgins Lake is located in Central Lower Michigan and is very easy to get to, as it is between I-75 and US-127, both of which are major freeways.

The closest town is either Prudenville or Houghton Lake, both on the south side of the adjacent Hougton Lake. There is a Walmart and even a Camping World along the M-55 highway south of Houghton Lake.

Some of the sites are huge, especially those sites furthest from the beach, and you may need a 50ft power cable here. The southwest most sites are the ones to be careful about reserving as those are the non-level sites. The sites closest to the beach are sunny, while the south-most sites are shady. Like many of Michigan's State Parks, this is a boating friendly campground.

Getting ready to leave the park.

There is a shortcut from the pump-out area to a local convenience store where you can buy firewood as the only place firewood is sold in the park is at the camp store - located at the day beach area, which is at least a 1/2mile walk.
