The PJ Hoffmaster State Park - named for Michigan's first state park administrator, is near Lake Michigan, with beach access, after about a 1/4 mile walk. The campground is completely wooded, with Little Bear Creek meandering through the park on it's way to Lake Michigan.

Our site was not that great, with a couple of trees in the middle of our site. However, we did manage as the site was rather large.

PJ Hoffmaster is adjacent to the metro Muskegon, Mi area, but technically in the town of Norton Shores. There is a mall with many shopping areas, grocery, and other stores only about 4 miles from the park.

The park is easily accessed via either US-31 or I-96.

There are no stores within walking distance, but Ice and Firewood is available at the park's campground entrance.

This is not a boating friendly park though, as there is no provision for launching a boat. However, the draw of this park is Lake Michigan, and with a sand dune between the lake and park, the park is somewhat isolated from cold winds that can come off Lake Michigan in the early season.

One nice feature of the park is Little Bear Creek. The creek is very shallow, and on a hot summer day, one could simply sit in the water if they are too tired to walk all the way to Lake Michigan.
