Muskegon State Park has two campgrounds; the Lake Michigan unit, and the Channel unit. They are about 3 miles apart, with the Channel unit being highly preferred. Oddly though, since the Lake Michigan unit is newer, it has more modern facilities. The Channel unit's shower buildings are showing their age.

Although the Lake Michigan unit is adjacent to Lake Michigan, it is behind dunes in a wooded area, not on the beach. A brisk walk is required to get to the lake. In contrast, the Channel unit has access to both Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan.

The campground is located on the north side of Muskegon Lake, and not far from Muskegon and North Muskegon. Getting there is easy, with freeway access from both US31 and I-96.

Even though the campground is close to town, you will want to stop off at the grocery store prior to arriving as it is some distance. Firewood though is available for sale right at the campground.

The park is boating friendly as are most of Michigan's State Parks. Access to Muskegon Lake is available from a boat launch nearby - but only for smaller boats 18ft and below. Larger boats can launch from Fisherman's Warf in Muskegon - about 6 miles from the campground.

The channel campground is also a great place to watch boats and ships entering the channel. The Channel Express ferry makes two apperances a day, and "Lakers" make an apperance once a week or so.

The channel campground itself has both wooded and open areas so sun-worshippers should pick their site on-line. The Lake Michigan campground is strictly wooded.
