Wilderness State Park is located on Lake Michigan, about 15 miles west of Mackinac City, Mi.

This is an out-of-the-way park, and I remember going here as a child with my parents, and camping with my children as a young adult. It has changed quite a bit over the years. I recall the beach being nice and sandy in those years - while it seems the park has let the beach go back to "nature".

The park is withing a short drive to Mackinaw City, I-75, and ferries to Mackinac Island. It provides a nice alternative to the touristy Mackinaw area.

Like most stat park campgrounds in Michigan, the sites are electricity only, and well worn. However, the campground is undergoing an expansion in the 2016 time frame, so who knows what the newer campsites will be like.

Currently, there are 250 campsites at the park, with a few cabins for rent. The expansion will add more campsites as well. Many people use this park as a base camp for the many activities in the area.

Note that the Mackinaw area was inhabited by both British and French in the day, so the spelling Mackinac or Mackinaw depends on whether or not it was named by the French or British. Regardless, the pronounciation is always Mackinaw.
