This page contains all of the various electrical projects that I have done on a 5th wheel trailer. For electrical projects done in a Class C motorhome, refer to the motorhome menu tab.
This distribution panel was installed in the front compartment of the RV and provides a base for connection of the various components such as TPMS repeater, LED lighting under the nose, and other items.
The wife sez, I hate those little puck lights over the dinette - fix it! So I found some elegant light fixtures along with 12VDC versions of mock Edison lights and upgraded the lights over the dinette.
Many RV'ers don't realize that whenever their battery is connected, there is power at the connector for the running lights. In this project, we take advantage of that and construct a cable to provide power at the hitch.
I don't know why all RV Mfgs have not yet gone to LED tail lights (yea I know - they are cheap). But every RV I have owned with incandescent tail lights have leaked. With LED tail lights, you can caulk those tail lights so they won't leak.
The trailer came with cable pull dump valves that really never worked. After discovering the manufacturer installed them incorrectly, I upgraded to electrical valves.
This was something that was lacking in the trailer from the day it left the factory - a 12VDC outlet in the entertainment center. In this project, I finally added the outlet.
A recent and popular trend in the RV world is the installation of LED strip lighting under the awning. Seems that just about all manufacturers have been installing them as standard equipment. The quick adoption of these stips mean that a RV just a few years old may not have such lighting, so in this project, we will install one.
Grand Design, Forest River, and other RV manufacturers have been installing a Furrion Solar Charge receptacle as of late, for the intended purpose of connecting a portable solar charger to your battery. However, the RV does not come with the plug for the receptacle, and good luck obtaining one from the RV manufacturer. In this project, we will use the solar receptacle for general purpose use.
One recent trend we noticed when shopping for a new fifth wheel is that several manufacturers are starting to install blue LED lighting in the bathroom and bedroom areas. Blue lighting is much easier on the eyes at night as it does not destroy your night vision with a glaring white light. And usually the blue light is bright enough to see where you are going.
One recent trend in RV amenities is the addition of LED strip accent lighting. These strips are inexpensive, and are finding their way into homes, RVs, and autos. In this project, I will be adding a cool-white LED strip to the underside of the sinktop.
The Victron BMV700 is a comprehensive battery management system that allows you to monitor your RV's battery condition.
It's not IF, but WHEN. When will you need the protection of an EMS (Electrical Management System)? Anytime you plug into a campground or RV park, you are at the mercy of the power system in that park. Some systems leave a lot to be desired, while other systems become overloaded when everyone has two air conditioners running full-blast.
