It always seems to happen. You save a few dollars by going the cheap route, but then you later end up buying the item you wanted in the first place. This happend with my step upgrade. I originally went with "Comfort Step" attachment to the OEM steps. But then I ended up with a set of "TorqLift GlowStep Revolution" steps, which were what I originally wanted in the first place.

Note to self - don't do this again.

While the Comfort Steps worked well enough, they still required setting them up. So if we were going to be traveling on a daily basis, they did not get setup. And they did take a bit of room in the storage compartment, so that was an issue as well. See my Comfort Step Review Here.

The TorqLift website has an app that helps determine which model step you need. You have to measure the width of the step opening and the height above ground for the top step. For me, I ended up needing model A8004, which is a 4 step version, 27.5" wide, and has a weight capacity of 350~375lbs depending on if you purchase the optional Glow Guide railing. This model also has a height range of between 32.5" and 40"

My RV's factory brackets were actually 27 3/4" wide (the steps fit into a 27 1/2" width), so I needed a spacer on each side to fill the gap; or I suppose I could have used a few extra washers. TorkLift does sell a set of spacers that consist of 4ea 1/4" spacers, but I only needed one, and at $56 for a set of 4, it was pretty expensive. So I opted to buy a couple of pieces of 1/8" aluminum stock and make my own. That way, I can put a 1/8" spacer on each side.

After removing the original steps, I decided the original factory brackets were on the thin side, so I found a few mending brackets at my local home store that I was able to modify to beef up the factory ones.

I also attached the bottom of the new step cage with another set of modified right angle brackets. These are cut to the length specified. Mounting holes will be drilled in each surface at assembly time.

The added spacer and bracket 1 is shown below. All hardware is 3/8" Grade 8. Holes have to be drilled into the RV frame as needed. Of course, your installation may differ.

Next, I attached bracket 2 as shown below. I used 1/4" Grade 8 hardware. Holes are drilled at time of assembly to ensure proper alignment. Use C-Clamps to temporarily attach brackets.

With my RV, I am always mindful as to how much additional weight is added to the rig. Surprisingly though, the overall weight went down! I weighed each item individually. The TorkLift assembly had a 61lb shipping weight, but it's actual weight (without hardware) was 49Lbs.

The removed steps (again without hardware) also came in at 49lbs. And the Comfort Step add-on weighed in at 27lbs.

I am allowing 5lbs for the new brackets, and a couple of pounds for the hardware. So adding everything together, the TorkLift Glow Steps were 56lbs, while the OEM steps were 51lbs, but adding the Comfort Step add-on increases that weight to 78lbs. And that added weight is still there whether the Comfort Step is attached to the steps or remains in storage.

By going with the TorkLift, I dropped 22lbs off the weight of the RV. Not bad.
